Hello friends. Things have been a bit quiet since Uncivilized’s announcement at Steam’s 4X fest, but rest assured work on the game has not lessened in the slightest. Even with Arc Raiders coming out…

Our announcement went really well, and it's super exciting to have the game out there for people to see. Thankfully after all that screenshot making, trailer editing and store page writing I'm back to my comfort zone of sitting with headphones on, programming for hours on end. 😌

Lots of great new features have been added to the game since then. The major one is that the diplomacy system has been fleshed out big time, with diplomatic objectives and loads of potential relationship paths to go down with each faction. I’ve refined the AI behaviour, added the ability to create trade routes, improved map generation, written a bunch of music, made lots of UI improvements, and LOADS of code improvements which will make expanding the game much easier.

The current build is in the hands of private playtesters, and will soon be ready to go out to people who aren’t sympathetic to me (maybe you?!). I’ve found myself caught up playing the game a few times when I should have been testing stuff, so I’ll take that as a good sign. My main aims with playtesting right now are optimising the early-to-mid game: Making sure there are no weird ways to softlock yourself, no long stretches of boring turns and to ensure there are no winning strategies that are safe to blindly follow each time. And also making sure the enemy factions don’t make weird proposals like begging for mercy after destroying a bunch of your cities.

Longer term, this build will keep improving until it becomes polished enough to be a demo, then once that is done I can add in the rest of the factions and then the game should be done! Maybe it’ll be that easy...

My aim is to keep the newsletters flowing now that I’ve started. Hopefully it’ll be interesting for you to get updates about the game, and having a small audience to please keeps me focussed on making the game more finished. And please tell your strategy loving friends to give Uncivilized a wishlist on Steam!

Until next time
